Loan laptop request form

PLEASE NOTE - You must be currently enrolled and studying to apply for a loan laptop.
There are limited laptops available to loan. Filling in the application form (link below) does not guarantee you will be able to loan a laptop.

To loan a laptop, you will need to complete the following form using your student login:

Your application will be assessed within the first two weeks of starting the semester. 

If you receive an email approving your application please read it carefully and follow the instructions to book and collect the laptop.

Your loan contract will be for one semester and you will need to return the laptop at the end of this loan period so other students can also have an opportunity to loan a laptop.

Please return the laptop when it is due back to avoid fines or further action being taken.

Why does Unitec have loan laptops available for students?

During COVID-19, Unitec sourced a stock of laptops to help students study online. Even though the national lockdowns are well and over, we are using the same laptops to assist students needing a temporary device. We only have a limited number of laptops available, so unfortunately, not everyone who applies will get one.

Do I need to pay for a loan laptop?

No, getting a laptop for a semester is free for all Unitec students.

When can I apply for a loan laptop?

The loan laptop application usually opens a month before a semester starts, and we will begin issuing laptops from week 2 of the semester. We encourage you to apply before the semester begins, as we will likely run out of laptops.

Is it guaranteed that I will get a laptop after I apply?

No, we will assess each application carefully and determine your eligibility for a laptop. To help us do that as quickly as possible, please answer the questions honestly and provide evidence of your financial hardship.

When will Unitec decide if I can have a laptop after applying?

If possible, we will decide by the end of the first week of your semester. If you have not heard from us by the second week of the semester, please email studentcentral@unitec.ac.nz.

How long can I keep a loan laptop?

We know you would like to keep it for longer than a semester, but we have so many new students needing a loan laptop every semester. It is only fair they are given a chance, too. By loaning you a device this semester, we hope it gives you more time to find a way to buy a laptop for yourself for future semesters. It is not intended for any student to keep a loan laptop for the entire programme duration.

When can I collect my laptop if my application is successful?

If you are eligible for a laptop, you will receive an email with instructions and information you must read and absorb (we will test your knowledge before you can collect your laptop). The laptop collection days will be specified in the email, usually within the first three weeks of the semester.

Can I download software onto the laptop?

Yes, you can. However, please be aware that there will be no software or software support installation from Student Central.
