What are Intellectual Disabilities?

Intellectual disability is a term used to describe a range of lifelong cognitive and developmental conditions that affect a person's ability to learn, communicate and perform everyday tasks. People with an intellectual disability are often resilient, creative, determined and honest individuals, who may require support with learning, communication, understanding and recall. There are many different types of intellectual disabilities and each person will need different support accordingly.

How can I support learners with an Intellectual Disability?

  • Recognise individual strengths
  • Break down complex tasks into simple ones, with straightforward instructions
  • Use clear, simple communication
  • Provide extra time for exams and flexible deadlines for assignments
  • Provide regular constructive feedback to help the student understand their progress
