Dysgraphia

Dysgraphia is a Specific Learning Disability (SLD) that primarily affects a person's handwriting ability and written expression. The process of writing involves visual spacing, fine motor skills and language processing, all of which pose challenges for people with Dysgraphia. The writing process is much slower, so students struggle with taking notes or doing handwritten exams.

Dysgraphics generally find other ways of expression, such as talking, much easier and thrive when provided appropriate alternative arrangements to handwriting.

How can I support learners with Dysgraphia?

  • Discuss the student's personal challenges and the adjustments they require
  • Provide lecture slides in advance
  • Encourage the student to utilise assistive technology, such as Speech to Text (Dictation) software
  • Allow adjustments such as extra time or access to a computer for written work and exams
  • Limit the amount of writing required
