Dyscalculia

Dyscalculia is a unique way of processing information related to numbers and math concepts. Despite a supportive learning environment, individuals with dyscalculia may experience challenges in recognizing patterns, sequencing, and handling dates, times, and money. It can also affect working memory and visio-spatial skills. It’s important to recognize that dyscalculia doesn’t diminish a person’s overall abilities, and it can coexist with other diagnoses. Addressing dyscalculia with understanding and tailored strategies can positively impact mental well-being.

How can I help learners with Dyscalculia?

It's important to understand that Dyscalculia can affect individuals in different ways.

  • Listen to what your student needs
  • Provide lecture slides in advance
  • Combine visual, auditory and kinesthetic approaches to reinforce maths concepts
  • Provide explicit, sequenced instructions
  • Extra time for assessments
  • Allow use of a calculator or other Assistive Technology
  • Use of colour and visuals to assist with understanding
